Makawao

Hello Everyone!

Today I'm continuing the historic tour of Makawao. 

This is the Matsui general store that was founded by Kekusuke Matsui in 1926 which provided the town with groceries & dry goods. Another interesting aspect of the business is that they sold marriage licenses and did watch repair. The Matsui's lived upstairs and provides housing in the back for their employee's.

This is an antique store that we love to browse in. It used to be the living room and kitchen of the building that is next to it. Strange right? I did find some sweet antiques in this shop.

This one reminds me of a cupie doll but with hair.

 Still a barber shop after all these years.

Jack fruit and protea blooms at the outdoor market on Baldwin street. They are gorgeous and the textures inspire me so much!

We did a lot of window shopping in Makawao, I loved the Christmas decorations that were out on display.

This was the Makawao Theater also built in 1926. Movies and news reels were 10 cents and were offered in English and in Japanese on Fridays.

 

Now it's home to a handful of gallery's. I purchase handmade chopsticks inlaid with turqouise that I will treasure forever!

We've come to the last stop of the tour. This is St. Josephs Church founded in the 1880's to serve Hawaiian Catholics and Portuguese immigrants. In 1911 the bell tower was added and the style of the church is Gothic.

I love the heart of Makawao. It's a beautiful melting pot of wonderfully diverse cultures living in harmony.

Happy Holidays everyone!

We had a superb time relaxing in Maui, the surf was high and the wind was wily.

One of our favorite places is Makawao, it's a very charming cowboy town.

We stopped in at the new history museum and did a walking tour which was quite fun.

These are boots with leather leg covers that the paniolo use to wear when riding. The first cowboys (paniolos) came from Portugal, where they taught Hawaiians how to ride and herd cattle. They settled the town along with Japanese, Chinese and Koreans.

The Komoda Bakery is a very special place. This family has been in business since 1916 and they make the best malasadas! A malasada is kind of like a jelly donut but better; ours were filled with guava and they were delicious. The bakery creates more than just malasadas, so when you’re in town stop by and see the fresh baked goodies, you won't leave empty handed.

There is a craft market in the town and I had to take this picture of the gorgeous jack fruit and protea blooms.

This used to be the Matsui general store, now it's home to one of my favorite boutiques. Holiday & Co. is owned by the lovely Isabella who has such a good eye for knowing just what you want. You can find hand made sandals, scarves, lovely tunics and jewelry here. Her boutique is special, you will find labels that you've not heard of on mainland.

I always find something that I treasure. Thank you Isabella!

I like this company a lot, mostly for it's textiles. I'm crushing on the fabrics I would love to know where they found this cloth. I love the shapes of these garments but I'm not daring enough to layer them like this. I love the caftan and the kimono jacket with the top and skirt! If you know where the fabrics are sourced let me in on it.

What a fun collection from Mona Kowalska! This is a perfect example of loose garments that have shape. I'm crushing on the tanks style dresses and tops with the rope detail, they remind me of Pua. I love that she isn't afraid to add swimwear to her collection too.
